Mary’s Monster by Lita Judge: a Review

Later this year, I will be leading a discussion on Frankenstein! I’m trying to learn as much as I can about the book and Mary Shelley before then.

I must confess I’ve never read Frankenstein and am working my way up to reading it. It’s going to be one of the books of my read harder challenge.

Anyways Mary’s Monster is a beautiful book. I read it in one sitting and the illustrations are gorgeous. It’s also in free verse. I learned much about Mary Shelley though through the format of the book.

The author also adds at the end bios of everyone that she mentioned in the book and also a note debunking how Frankenstein was conceived at a party.

Like I said the illustrations are gorgeous! They’re dark but tell the story of Mary Shelley’s life and how maybe the monster was created from life experiences rather than just coming out of thin air. You’ll just have to read it for it’s beauty and simplicity.

Rating 5 stars.

Here you can see more of the lovely illustrations in the book!
